Readers Question: I’m a paper girl and I get £5.50 a week, 7 days a week, 2 rounds a day. Am I the only one that thinks this is a joke?

It sounds a very bad deal.
Paper rounds are not covered by statutory minimum wage laws, so wages are determined by supply and demand. However, if you are getting less than £2 an hour then this is really poor, and I wouldn’t think it worth doing.
The minimum wage for 16 and 17-year-olds is £4.05 min wage 16-18
Maybe you could tell your employer you’ve joined a trade union for paper boys/girls and then demand a minimum wage of £2.00 an hour. If you do 7 hours a week, you should be getting £14 a week.
Also, it might be worth thinking of alternative jobs. Hand washing cars could be quite lucrative. Some people are willing to pay £6 to have their car hand washed and polished. You could offer to do it for £4. Then all you need to do is wash 2 cars a week and you will get more than a 7 time a week paper round.
What is a good wage for a paper round?
For a schoolchild under 16 years of age. A decent paper round would be something earning an hourly rate of £3.00. If your round takes 45mins a day – 6 days a week – 4.5 hours a week. Look to get at least £13.50.
i have a paper round and get £25.50 a week. This is cause i do 2 rounds a day. one worth 15 quid the other worth 10.50. i probably do bout 40 papers a day 7 days a weekin the morning.

basically ur getin completely ripped off mate i get £25 a week and i work 6 days (all in the morning at 6:45) and it takes me half an hour. I get £4 on week days (mon-fri) and £5 on saturdays (but that takes me about 45 mins because the papers are heavier)

That’s lucky you get like 7.50 an hour you should do one paper round 5 or 6 hours a week and you be making bank mate. Meet the racks

I’m 33 and remember I used to only get £7.25 a week, that was years ago…. Looks like your gettin well and truelly ripped off. Tell your employer to stop living in the dark ages. It does work complaining, I complained and it went up to £8.25 not much but at the time we all thought it was great, that was a 7 day week, Sundays were the worst for magazines. Good luck

i just got myself a paper round, i am getting paid £12 a week. that is a 6 day week and all morning rounds, it takes me around half hour to do each round. do you think this is an ok wage ?
considering my mate did a paper round about a year ago and wos gettin paid a wacking £24 a week, for a paper round that is GOOD money. im beginning to quistion if it is worth it. do you think i should ask for a raise to £15 ?

I do a paper round 7 days a week for £25 per week. The weekdays take about 20 minutes and the weekends take about 40 minutes.

Hi, im 14 and i earn £26 a week
i do one round a day consisting of about 30papers
the round is small and easy
however, it is in the morning
i earnt £115 from christmas tips
on and my round is monday to saturday (sunday off :P)
my son delivers 28 papers a day 6 days a week for £7 a week its f**king ridiculous he started with 16 papers and shes gradually adding more but the wage is the same talk about child slavery there should be a law about minimum wage for children
I am turning 13 in a couple of weeks, and i am hoping to soon get a paper round job to earn more cash, i dont mind working mornings and after school but only weekdays not weekends (i have dance classes), i imagine i would not get much more than £5.00 for that, i am starting to think is it worth it, but my parents are tight (soz mum) and when i go town wiv my mates i can hardly buy anything and my mates r of in jack wills and superdry, i do housework but i still only get £1.50 a week, i really need the cash!!! but from wat i’v heard the effort put in isant really being paid of!!!!!! Help, i need cash!!!!
Same here! my mum give s me £1 a week ! Tight (so not sorry mum)! Just tell her how much u need it and u feel left out but that might not work…not with my mum anyway but it works with my gran:)
ivy that’s only some people i have a paper round and i work 5 days a week and i get 15 pounds and i deliver the express and star and im 14 it depends how far you go and im like that i want to go shopping and all so i would defo go with it but make sure you ask what paper and wage there are going to pay you more than a tenna yh but not less otherwise it will take you ages to buy nice things xxxxx
