AQA Unit 4 European Union Exam Questions

My students have asked me for some potential exam questions on the European Union unit for AQA. If I was setting the paper these are the kind of issues I would be interested in asking.

Monetary Policy. Explain how the ECB manage the macroeconomic environment of the EU.

• Discuss the relative success of the ECB in achieving the main macroeconomic objectives of low inflation, low unemployment and high growth within the Eurozone.

Euro. Explain the benefits that Euro members may have received in the past 10 years.

• Discuss whether other EU countries such as the UK would benefit from joining the Euro. What challenges would this bring to the EU.

Income Inequality. Explain why the EU has income inequality between members and within member countries.

• To what extent is it important to reduce inequality in the European Union area.
• Discuss available policies that the EU could use to reduce inequality

General Tips for Unit 4 Case Study

Remember that it is a case study and there are many marks for correct use of data. This means that you need to select appropriate data and use it to back up your arguments. It is not just a test of what you can remember.

Evaluation.

It is also important to evaluate the data. For example

• The source of the data suggests they will be biased. eg. consumer groups will use statistics to boost their case.
• Data is incomplete.
• Significance of changes is important
• Data Can be misleading
