Readers Question: How is it that our businesses are failing, and we are cash-strapped and borrowing furiously (from whom?), while Israel, an economy dependent on foreign aid, is awash with cash? Israeli President Simon Peres said this to an Israeli economic forum in Tel-Aviv on 10 October 2007, according to the Hebrew Israeli daily Mááriv:
‘These days, it is possible to build an empire without colonies and armed struggle. Just look at the empire Bill Gates built himself without the aid of soldiers or police, and note its power. Faced with such power, governments are unable to exercise their own power. They have banks and treasuries, but there is no money in them. Governments are therefore incapable of functioning productively. This, however, does not seal off businesses. Israeli businessmen are investing all over the world. Israel is experiencing unprecedented business successes. We have won our economic independence. We are buying up Manhattan, Poland and Hungary.’
Did the world’s money end up in Israel?
- Israel’s economy has done relatively well, despite recent financial turmoil it grew 5% a year last year. It has thriving hi tech chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
- Israel GDP was $195,308m in 2007, this is a tiny fraction of the world’s GDP.
- According to the World Bank Isreal GDP per capita is at least 20 times greater than GDP per Capita in Palestine.

My answer to the question is shockingly un-PC: Jews have got brains. At least the evidence for this is quite good: Jews have won a disproportionately large number of Nobel Prizes, plus Jewish immigrants to the USA over the last century have done better than various other immigrant groups. There is also the fact that the Jewish lobby in the USA sees to it that far more aid per head is channelled to Isreal than many poorer and more deserving countries.
Re the quote from the Isreali paper about Isrealis buying up property etc in “Manhattan, Poland and Hungary” this is history repeating itself. Didnt Jews in Poland have a saying before WWII (referring to Poles): “We own the houses, you own the streets”?
