The government spends money for a variety of reasons
- Reduce Inequality
- Provide Public Goods
- Provide important public services like education and health (merit Goods)
In the UK, the biggest department for public money is social security. This takes over £133,000m, this is almost a quarter of all public spending. It goes on financing a variety of benefits.
In recent years, the government have increased significantly spending on health and education. Although, much to their disappointment it hasn’t met with an improvement in perceptions of better service.
