Readers Question: Examine whether an extension of the national minimum wage to 16-18 year olds would affect their participation in the labour market. (10)
National Minimum Wage Rates from 1 October 2009
- Workers Aged 16-17 – £3.57
- Workers Aged 18-21 – £4.83
- Workers Aged 22 and over – £5.80
In theory extending the minimum wage to 16-18 year old workers would increase the incentive to join the labour market because work will become more attractive compared to studying at school and not earning.
However, the minimum wage for 16 and 17 year olds is still relatively low. It is £3.57 for people under 18. Therefore, the benefit of working on the minimum wage may still seem insignificant compared to the benefits from studying and getting qualifications which will enable higher life time earnings.
Also many 16 and 17 year olds probably live rent free therefore there is not an economic necessity to go out and get a job.
Personally, I think the effect of a minimum wage for 16-18 year olds is relatively insignificant, I can’t think of many students who would give up A levels just so that they could go and work in McDonalds for £3.57 an hour.
What is most likely is that there will be an increase in the participation of young workers doing part time jobs in addition to studying full time.

my son works 11 hours a week because this is the kind of work he wants to do i think it discusting they work for so little he brings in 130 a week working on a demolition company and he loves it i think the goverment should put this this min wage up it might make half these young kids get a job instead of dossing all the time
What about 13 year olds who do paper rounds, delivering very early in the morning and straight after school 7 days a week for a set amount per paper delivered?
i worked from 8.30-5.30/6pm 5 days a week this summer for £80 a week in a hairdressers, with a 30 min break whenever i could grab it. this is a fixed amount, even if i worked an hour over because we still had clients.
is this wrong? i roughly calculated it was aroun 1.70-1.80 an hour. email me opinions on aimee13mini@hotmail.co.uk

My niece works for a big international hairdresses. She works from nine in the morning till six at night with 30 min break. My niece earns £20, she is only 15.When i questioned the manager the reply i got you should be made up we let her work here. This cheap labour should be stopped.
[...] The minimum wage for 16 and 17 year olds is £3.53 min wage 16-17 [...]
i have just got a job at a pub run by the weatherspoons industry.
I turned 16 in april and wanted a job desperatly as i hate not being able to afford to go out on the weekends and not being able to pay for simple things such as food, the cinema and other small things. Now i will be working 5 hours friday night, 9 hours saturday and 9 hours sunday, the most i believe i will earn is 108 pound a week. The least on minumum wage is 80 sumthing pound.
Tbh im not surprised people turn to drug dealing and other petty crimes. This amount of money is extortionate.
If i go to the cinema im classed as an adult at the age of 15 which costs me 6.50 per movie. If i want fags or alcohol or to go to a night club i must be an adult which is 18, to catch a train or bus im classed as an adult at 16. But yet my min wage is 3.53 because im NOT an adult. Well if im not a adult why am i paying an adult train or bus fair and an adult cinema ticket but i can go to an adult pub or buy adult fags or alcohol.
To be an adult it should be ONE age not several and i think this wage is disgracefull tbh.
Hi there i’m working a part time job in a restruant and getting paid £3.53 an hour and i’am 16 years of age. However, my fellow co-worker who has just turned 17 years of age is getting paid £4.00 every hour and he is doing the exact same job as i’am. This can not be right!
Could someone advise me on minimum wage for a 16 year old and also advise me about this problem with my fellow co-worker getting paid more than me.
Thankyou,
Will
I work at primark and we’re on £3.90 an hour (I’m 17) yet people at 18 who do the same job as me are on £5.20, hardly seems fair as we do the same job!!!
You english are very complanin about money per hour. Be happy i get $1 per lady underwear even though 2 hours of creation. Whilst i make the underwear at this low wage to support a family of 6 you get £3.90 to sell this!!
I’m 16 and work at a hotel for 3.53 an hour but i am the only waitress in the restaurant and having to wait on around 30 odd people a night and then waking up and doing the same. Also if i do get help i have to tell them what to do i have been working in hotels since i was 7 as my mum and dad had one so surely with my experience and the amount i have to do i should get a lot more correct or worng? also if something goes wrong in the restaurant and its not at my hands i still get the blame1
I used to work on a chicken farm collecting eggs etc. I was 15 at the time and only got paid 2.50 and hour. I would work for about 12-16 hours a weekend earning on average just 25.00. The pay was terrible considering the job contained health risks. Now at 16 when I get a job any money greater than 2.50 is welcomed and I think that we as a whole should be thank ful for what we do get paid, anything is better than nothing.
3.53 it not enoughmoney for peopleof that age
I live in Glasgow . I would like to work as a taxi telephonist for Glasgow Private Hire Im 16 Would They Take Me On ?
Is Most Jobs For 16+ Or 18+ , If Its 18 Why Are They Giving Out National Insurance Numbers At 16 Then ?
Well i get 4 pound an hour and i’m 15. HA!
Why is it that not only is the hairdressing industry paying less than minimum wage to 16yr olds they also use them for slave labour as in a weeks trial is unpaid, surely this is not legal? A trial is working, is it not?, not termed voluntary work therefore they should be paid, has any1 else come across this?
I’m aged 17, And left College at 16. (Yes i did a year but could not bare the school life feeling we was told we wouldnt get) I got myself a job and was earning £5 an hour. When the new owners of the buisness arrived my wage was put to £4.50 because i was 16 yet co-workers aged 18 went up. I worked 35 hours a week and got just under £158. Personally i struggled on this, the government assume all 16/17/18yo’s still live at home, sponging off our parents but how wrong are they. People who earn more money than i do are struggling and i’m in the same situation earning less.
I am 17 and i am currently working at sports direct on £4.00 a hour, I have been working there since nov 08 but they have not given me shifts for the past 6 weeks so i have no wage, when i do get my wage at the end of the month I am paying emergancy tax!, to be honest I do not understand this, a small part-time job because I am at 6th form and I hardly get any wage, then when I do I get taxed. I think that something should be done because when teenagers are wanting a job there is no where that is recruiting, but then when no one needs a job there is lots avaliable.
Another thing I don’t understand is why you need a Cv say if you are applying to work at morrisons to stack shelfs.
Ive just started a new part time job in a restaurant, im paid £4.50 an hour, i applied for a weekend job, but because im on holidays after finishing my GCSEs i managed to get a job on tuesdays, wednesdays, thursdays and fridays as well. Ive been looking for a job since i was 13 and its really not easy! Most employers want people over the age of 16, and im very lucky with how much i get paid, so basically just keep looking for a job, any money is better than none, but i would never finish school at 16 because the pay is just not worth it! the qualifications from studying are much better
I think that this is horrific! I am 16 and I do lots of quite tiring jobs, for very little payment. I think that it should at the very least be raised to £4 an hour! Especially if people are getting paid more to do exactly the same job as you!
I am one of the lucky ones. I am 16 and have got my first job at Brunel University. It entails serving food, cleaning up and other various things. It’s not a bad job and I get paid £6.51 an hour and get free meals.
Quite frankly, I think the minimum wage is absolutely ridiculous. I’m 16 and I don’t understand why it is that people over 18 get paid a substanstil amount more than people younger who are doing the exact same job, especially when 15 and 16 year olds are classed as adults on trains, busus and at all cinemas and are forced to pay the adult fare. To be able to afford the rip off that is train and bus fares, we deserve to be paid that little bit more. The cut-off age for “adult” should be one age other than several, it would make things a whole lot easier not to mention fairer when you take wages into account.
I am 19 years old and currently studying a degree, renting a house and trying to keep a part time job. I find it impossible to see how that would make me considered a child. With the minium wage as low as it is for under 21 I dont see how any young person is meant to have a positive attitude towards aiming to strive for the best… Beacuse if you cant pay the rent on the way then ur never going to be able to get past the first hurdle. I think there should be one flat rate for all ages. If two people are doing the same job then why should one get paid more then the other just because they are a few years older, at one point women were considered the lesser of the sexes and it was thought they were not worth the same wage as a man. Have we now changed this prejudice from different pay for different sexes to different pay based purely on different ages? should the actual amount of work and the effort not be put into consideration?!
Well i’m 16 and have 3 jobs and still at school i have coached gymnastics since i was 14 for £5 an hour coach trampolining for £6.5? an hour and work at a shop for £4.6 an hour.I consider myself quite lucky¬
[...] There are frequent readers comments about the minimum wage for 16-18 year old [...]
May I say you 16yrs old who are moaning that you should earn the same as Adults, the reason you don.t is because you are not experienced and can not be left to work on your own intiative, although i respect some young people have a very good work ethic, the majority of young people unfortunatley do not! respect the fact that someone is giving you a chance and is willing to pay you minimum wage, they could employ a polish worker who will work twice as hard for half as much and not complain!!! At 16yrs old you are very cheeky if you honestly think you should earn the same as an adult!!( go to college and improve your earning prospects there) then you might be worth it ! however by the time you have graduated you will be an ADULT!!! so you will earn the same as your counterparts, but just maybe you will earn more because your qualifications will set you above other employees ( should they then be paid the same as you or more based on their age? or do you feel you should earn more because you have spent 4-5 years improving your prospects for little or no money? whilst they were earning min wage? grow up kids welcome to the REAL WORLD and be grateful for any work and wages you receive in this current economic climate, YOU ARE VERY LUCKY!!!!!!
Kim knight well im 16 i do bar support in a Night club, they think im older than i am and i get £5/75 per hour. For the work and stupid hours i do to bring home around £100 a week i think is ridiculous, i work a lot harder than you do for your money guranteed and get treat a lot worste for it. why are people lucky for working for the sake of £3.50? would you? i want to be rich not giving up plans for the sake of £10 pound i would rather sell drugs
Extending the minimum wage to 16-18 year olds is a good thing I think
currently i am ‘working’ at my local vets. I sweep and mop the floors, clean the cages, wash and dry up and help out when i’m needed. and in return they teach me about what they do in operations and let me stand in on them and on the consultations. I’m 16 and do not get paid for any of it. yet i still consider myself lucky because it’s all great experience for the future( i want to be a vet) and the more experience i get now means its a bit easier in the future. i do the occasional work for some family members and it nice to get the money even if its not much, but i don’t bother with spending it( and don’t see how others can spend soo much! whilst living at home) and am currently saving every penny i get for a car etc.
In some ways I think that the min wage for 16-18yr olds should be raised- as we are basically adults, and some of us do have a full time job. i dont think it fair that people who are sometimes only a year older get much better paid for doing the exact same work or less then the 16-18 yr old. But in other ways it shouldn’t because we dont really have the experience which is needed.
But whatever we get are we ever going to say its enough? because there is always going to be someone on a hire wage and its only for a couple of years on £3.53 until the min wage changes for 18+
Heyy Everyyone
But i qeht paid £14.00 an hour && im 16 turninq 17 iin Auqust!

Boom.Boom.Smack…!
I am a 16 year old girl and have been working in a cafe for nearly 2 years now and i get £4 an hour. I am their head waitress and when their is a problem it all gets put on me because i have to train all the new staff and do my job as best as i can. I work about 27 hours a week and still don’t think we are getting paid enough!!
I am a 14 year old girl and personally I think that is way too low! There are more and more young people not moving out of home but sponging off their parents nowadays. I don’t know when this article was written but now that it is the law to complete your A levels, I think the pay should be increased to encourage young adults.
I fail to see how stacking shelves requires experience. Stock rotation and time management arent rocket science. Im 15, and im 16 in 2 months, and i have been looking for a job since last year. The only place hiring was a hair dresses, who told me i would earn £1.10 per hour, and they only had 11 hours available for me to do, at STUPID hours. £11 per week? ontop of full time education, after-school revision, and homework? HA! I turned them down. it was so not worth it. I get £20 cleaning my grandmas bingo hall which takes me about 3 hours when her cleaner isnt in. She even said that the 21 year old cleaner takes 5-6 hours, does teh same job as me, and has a horrible attitude. yeh, she was a cleaner in a school so she has more experience then me, but hoovering a large area and washing some tables doesnt require experience either.
I know i would do a better job then half the 18-21 year olds out there, but unfortunately, there are no jobs available for me. I will have to wait a few months and then go looking again. Ive already went to a shopping centre and asked 18 places in one day, 15 werent employing, and the other 3 either payed BADLY, or you had to be 18.
No wonder theres so many drop outs in school today. If teenagers have to turn to selling drugs in order to have enough to be able to get trains, buses, go and see a film etc, i think id prefer to get £100 within 2 hours, then work 100 hours to get that same amount. im not a stranger to hard work either, but this is not right.
Want to know another thing? if you are classed as a young offender (been arrested under 18) you dont get £30 EMA (EMA is an allowance you get at 18) youget £60-100 PER WEEK. The council also make sure you get a job whilst in or out of school so that “you have no reason to offend again” You know what, Governments crap. Criminals get payed more then students who work hard to get somewhere in life? MAKES NO SENSE.
Hahaa, i laugh at the people on here who say we dont deserve to be payed more because we arent old enough and have no experience. Excuse me, but my friend works in a cafe, he waits on tables, cleans tables, washes dishes, and gets £3 less then a girl who is 18. he does more, works longer, and is generally a better waiter. he smiles, he chats to the customers, hes just better. yet he gets payed way less? IT DOESNT MATTER HOW OLD YOU ARE. you should be payed according to how much work you do, how well you do it, and how long you do it for.
I’m 15 years old and going into my last year of school. But once i finish school and i’m hoping to move out. This is off topic to the current conversation, but could people give me tips on what to do should i rent a flat out on my own or with a friend/somebody else. Also would i be able to afford the rent of a average rent a month while going to college and being in part time work.
I work in a news agents in hampshire and i only get £3.53 ph. Plus my parents are very strict with money and never give me any( I’m not exaggerating), so I get about £50 on top of college. I’m not on the EMA either, which is frustrating as i have friends who have £30 plus a better paid job and money from their parents. Minium wage should be the same as over 18’s, its very rare you even see 18 year olds living on their own now anyway. meaning there is no point in the getting paid more than us, life is a *****.. mine is anyway!
I think you should get your facts straight because I work at McDonalds, and I earn £5.50 an hour, not £3.53.
I work as a lifeguard and i am on constant alert on poolside 8 hour a day with one 30 minute break while still being alert for anything happening in the pool. I am looking out for danger and preventing serious accidents or death yet i am getting paid 2p more than the minimum wage is this really fair i am 17 not 12 i am trying to support myself instead of scrounging off parents but when i get paid i only go and get taxed leaving me not much better off than when i started my shift SORT IT OUT GORDON
A minimum wage does not mean you have to pay the minimum. Companies can, of course, pay more than the minium of £3.53. It just means they are not allowed to pay less than £3.53.
Its a classic opportunity cost scenario really. Stay at school or work. Stay at school and you lose out on the wages you could earn or the ability to do more in your free time rather than homework. So even if the min wage is £3.50 you may value the work at £5 since you get the wage plus more control over your free time. The deal is now to decide whether you feel that £5 per hour now is worth more than what you could earn in the future with a higher qualification… problem is how do you value the future? Investment appraisal techniques help but that’s for another day. Chances are that most people will actually equate £5 now with the present and not look to the future.. (after all in the long run we are all dead!) I fancy that a low minimum wage for this age group coupled with an economic recession will have little impact on improving the participation rate. Plus, getting more of this age group to participate now may well have a detrimental affect on the future productivity and competitiveness of the uk!
I get 6.77 a hour and im only sixteen – you just need to find the right place … i spent a year and a half looking for a job and finaly two came along – i get 150 quid a week and work after college – just search for the right thing.
Ref Kim Knight,
me and my friend are both 17 and work on the sales team at a stone company. We believe you work as hard as you want to work and age doesn’t come into the equazion. Afteral thats what insentives are for arn’t they. we get paid £3.53 hourly and work 35 hours a week. We are often left to run the office when managers are away. we are fully trained to make sales order purchase items, invoicing and aranging deliveries. its not about age as i think you will be the type that is in a bog down job that isnt going anywhere, one of many people in a big firm that doesn’t no nothing and never speaks to the owner. most proberly some secretary that passes on message and that holds a grudge to us younger people that have the time to progress unlike some people Kim that are deep down not happy with their job. Im sorry but you want to be gratefull that we all work and not spunging off the taxes YOU pay.
I work for McDonalds food store ofcorse everyone has heard of it
im only 17 and i earn 4.35 an hour and if i work well it will go up by 10p every 6 months this isnt bad but could be much better alot of people our age complain that this is a low wage but it just genually good to have a job at this age plus mine is secure.
I live in Australia and get $16.13 an hour which is roughly equivalent to £8.97. I am 17 and when i turn 18 this rate will go up to $18.97(£10.56) then eventually i will go casual and get $22.76(£12.68) not bad hey?
Hey i live in west yorkshire, curently working part time on a milk round, earning 5 pound an hour. Monday morning work 4am til 7.30 and same again tuesday, 2 days a week brings 38 pound 50 not bad to say im 16, great while im still at school.
Hi, in reference to Kim Knight..
I am 16 years old and get payed 2 pound less than any adult at my work place. I am in charge of co checking, disposals, reductions, foas (functioning on avaliability (basically if I screw up there I screw up the orders)) ect blah blah. So no, age has nothing to do with it. Give anyone 12 weeks of training and they will be as good as the next person. I do a lot of work, to a good standard. Some people in the store probably do less work and get payed MORE. Just why? While I am alrite on my pay, 4.54 (I suppose) I can’t stop comparing it to what 18+ people get. It seriously annoys me.. Its like paying a black person less than a white person. You just can’t do that, as with basing pay on genders so WHY age? As long as the job is done, in the time limit should it really matter? And another thing, 15 year olds have to pay adult prices at the cinema now.. And it is 16 for trains and busses. What the f..luck
. The government put out a ‘generous minimum wage for 16 and year olds’.. Yeah bullshimmy.. Unfair. Not right. Sort it out! I wouldn’t be bothered if the adult minimum wage was the same.. Wow I need to punch something now cya
im a 16 year old girl and working as a receptionist in a soliciters ive just left school and come straight in to the job i get paid 3.53 an hour i do 40 hours a week and i love the job but do seriously think 16 year old should get paid more.
Most of you are so stupid OMG get over it. Adults get paid more because on average they are more expirenced, more reliable and LESS IMMATURE! you are lucky most of you are still in school and do a little paper round or a saterday job at a hair dressers sweeping a floor and making tea yeah really hard work try doing a 50 hour week to be able to afford to go out on you ONE day off to be able to pay rent so that you have a roof over your head and food to f**king eat im only 16 and i do it
my mum ( a single parent ) kicked me out because i didnt have a job try living with your mate knowing your own mother wont help you out and doesnt care that your really strugglin ! do u pay for your own internet your rent your phone bill your dinner etc??? didnt think so get in the real world!!!!
I Pay £40 a month for digs. and thats not including helping my mum out. i am only 16 and i have had to work 12 hour shifts. i have to work alot of hours to keep myself on my feet. i think this minimum wage has to go up. no 16 – 17 year old can live on this wage! we are in the real world now and it pays alot!

i am gettin payed 3.60 an hour for 8hours and only getting 25 quid, and 18 yr olds aere getting £1.30 more just because they are older, it is not acceptable, everyone should be treated the same as others, not like dole dossers who get more money than people who have a job!!!
i work at the bolholt hotel in walshaw. im 16 year old and i work from half past 3 in the afternoon till 2 o’clock in the morning and i get 35 pound for one saturday night and we dnt get tips because we are only waiters. its terrible but i need the money
I work in Primark and I get paid 4.17 an hour. But across the road someone the same age as me (16) that works in New Look gets paid 5.75 and hour and 50% off clothes. Here’s some advice.. do not get a job in Primark they treat there staff like, CRAP!
hi my name is Rachel and my husband is 18 years old and is looking for a good paying job to help support me and our baby boy who will be born in february so please help him find a job he’s a dropout working on getting his GED though please please please help him out. Thank you very much!
In reply to Sarah, none of these people are immature, everything costs money these days, and most teenagers are made pay for things themselves, everyone over 16 is made pay adult prices for things like the cinema and bus fares etc. How can they pay for it when they get such low wages?
If you get kicked out of your house, then that is your problem, these people have just as much right to complain as you have, I think maybe it is you that should grow up
i think its disgusting
kids should be paid 4.50
I’m 16 and I work in a simple grocery store. I work from 7 till 5 and I get £3.50/ hr.
Is this right?
i think the minimum wage for people aged 16 is f£$&ing disgracefull and the govenment should be taken into a field and shot for allowing this travesty to occur
i am i person who likes people who like other people who also like people now i get paid 500 pounds an hour working as a a salesman who sells fake hollisters merchendise
hello i am from romania and i get paied 25p a hour is that gud ya?
Hello, i am at college full time from tuesday to friday i attend from 9 until 5 in the evening, i also have a job and work straight from college and do 18 hours a week. what is the official number of hours i should be working because ive been told it is only 12….?
give me the job for me.
I work on Produce at tesco im 16 and I get £5.28 an hour which is good for my age I take in around £230+ a month, this job is partime as I also attend college. My advice to any of you would be to apply for any vacancies in tesco its good pay and a good company to work for.
Some of the money people are getting that have commented on here is shocking!! I didnt know that some jobs pay so little money!!
Like the Primark one, you would think Primark and TkMaxx are similar but i work in TK and get paid £5.93 an hour…. and im 16!!!
If anyone is looking for a job, TKmAXX is the best bet as it pays a lot for 16-18 year olds!!!
Supermarkets pay up to £7.50 an hour!
actually you get paid £4.25 a hour at mcdonalds if you are 16-17 and then it goes up once you turn 18
Hello i am 17 years old and I finding job just on weekends in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Just i have one problem I am not really nice speak English. Thanks
I am 16 and I have been working in a pub in my local area for about 10 months now and I am on £4 an hour seeing as though I started when i was 15 I feel that my pay is good.
I can see where most of you are coming from that you feel the minimum pay is a bit low but at the end of the day your employer is the one who decides on how much you receive, £3.53 in just a minimum amount that your employer has to pay you.
All you have to think about is they are acctually paying you and allowing you to work in their working enviroment, so yes your pay not be as good as some peoples but ask yourselves out of all your friends are the only one that has got off you butt and got a job?
i am 16 and i have been working in mcdonalds in my local area for about a year now do you think i should ask for more money ?

Hi, Im 16, Went sixform hated it left and now got 2 jobs, waiter and shop assistant: Waiter: bout 35 hours week, Shop: 15. is this wrong bearing in mind i do 11 hour shifts and 16 hour shifts on waiter job???
400 – 600 quid a month ??
Im 15 and i work 7.30am-5.00pm, i get paid £15 and i get a 10 minute lunch break, is that alright?
Hi im a 15 year old boy, work on a farm for 10 hours a day and have a 4 hour break, i earn 20 pound for these hours. Is this good for a farm job ? or should i ask for a raise ?
Im 19 years old,
I work for £5.50 per hour at pizza hut as a delivery boy and get paid 80pence per drop. Theres not enough money becuase that 80pence is less than what it costs for fuel let alone car maintenance has to come out my hourly wages, so basically im working for about £1.50 an hour on average as car maintenace, repairs costs alot when purchasing parts and paying for labour.
I also work for homebase which i earn just over £6p/h and also get 1% commission on the products I sell, so this is not a bad paid job as it does not cost me anything just hardcore labour and selling techniques.
IS THIS RIGHT??
im 16 years old and work at a hairdressers which is busy.
i work 8:50am till 6pm/6:30pm and for my dinner break i go out to get it come back with my lunch which takes me no more then 5mins and when i come back i dont get chance to have my dinner as i get called away to help.
and i get paid £20 for the day.
when i worked out the average pay for a 9-6 working day it came up a : £32.13 even though its only £12.13 when you add it all up over a length of time theres a difference.
i dont know if this is okay for the hours i work
but standing on my feet for that long only have 15min break i think its pritty unfair.
is my view but at the end of the day i know its experience but i think we should all be entitled to the right pay and not under pay
I reckon since people can legally work from the age of 16 full time or part time, the set minimum wage for 16-18 should be at least £5ph…a comment earlier pointed out the clear fact that we have to pay adult faire on buses from the age of FOURTEEN, yet because we are not ADULT yet we do get paid an adult wage! How can this be justified I ask?!?!?
me n my gay partner, reckon since people can legally work from the age of 54 full time or part time, the set minimum wage for 35-90 should be at least £5ph…a comment earlier pointed out the clear fact that we have to pay adult faire on buses from the age of FOURTEEN, yet because we are not ADULT yet we do get paid an adult wage! How can this be justified I ask?!?!?
I don’t really think we should talk about right or wrong- businesses exist to make a profit and even if a 16 year old is as good, worse or better than an adult if it is possible to pay them less than from a business’ point of view that is what should be done, never mind personal feelings on the subject. I don’t like it but I can understand why it works this way- the only way to get a change is to stop people working for bad wages. It is simple supply and demand plus cost cutting- if many people want jobs, it is low pay, and high pay when there are few.
I have just turned 16 and have been working since i was 14. I started off at £4.50 ph and have been raised to 5 ph
i think this is all pathetic i am in colege 3 days a week and they class that as im in full time education i get £60 a fortnight ema and that goes no were these days been searching for a job for month cant get anything so some of these people should be lucky they can get a job cause at least the money the earn helps its better than earning nothing when you havent got a job i need a job to save to get a car to get a better job and earn more money guna be retired by the time i can afford a car
I am 15. I work in Angelo’s (chip shop) in Kilmarnock and I only get £2.50 an hour. Is this fair?
I have 7 to 8 kids, unknown 8th, could be mine, on min wage plus 44p more, is this fair, i love chips
hi i wrk in a factory based enviroment (mechanical fitting)
i get paid £3.75 an hour and my boss who does hardly as much has me is on £12 an hour its nt fair as i wrk my bollocks of and he tells me wat to do all day for 12 quid i bring home 145 a week for 40 hrs also i dont do weekends cos i wud get 17.50 quid for satday nt worth going in
it also pisses me of how people younger get paid a lot less i no we havent gt much experience but being a hard wrker changes everything in my opinion
and people wonder why people like me toss it off at wrk
yep i wonder too haha
I am 16 and work in debenhams and get 4.83 an hour! very good compared to everyone else!
ouch..those minimum rates look ugly..though i have plenty of friends around 15-17 who get around 8 or 10 dollars per hour around adelaide and perth,so im not scared..just gotta get a good job, like in a hotel or something
Get a life! School days are the best of your life – why ruin thme by working!
i’ve just turned 15years old, and i get paid £6 an hour for being a kitchen porter, many of the other staff were i work are upset that i get paid the same as them when i’m only 15. It is good that i get paid this much, but is it wrong that i get this much when they get the same.
:] respect!
I think its sick, basically I’m 17 and have left college because I messed up the first year I have decided to go back in September but need to earn some travel money I applied for 19 jobs and only 1 place got back to me I will be on £5.53 and hour and working 24hours per week at a local holiday park…I feel I should be on a lot more just because I am young…I did want to leave home but I don’t see how I can working for less that £100 a week. No wonder more and more teens are still living with their parents they cant afford to move out everything is rising in price but the wages seem to stay the same how is this fair the Government needs to sort their act out. I think they should be one minimum wage for all ages and it should be about £7.50 per hour at least that way people might be able to take better care of them selves and their family life
Why is life soo shit !! No wounder people relate there selfs to selling drugs and crime.
