Wages for Paper Rounds

Readers Question: I’m a paper girl and I get £5.50 a week, 7 days a week, 2 rounds a day. Am I the only one that thinks this is a joke?

From: Wages of Paper Boys

It sounds a very bad deal.

Paper rounds are not covered by statutory minimum wage laws, so wages are determined by supply and demand. However, if you are getting less than £2 an hour then this is really poor, and I wouldn’t think it worth doing.

The minimum wage for 16 and 17-year-olds is £4.05 min wage 16-18

Maybe you could tell your employer you’ve joined a trade union for paper boys/girls and then demand a minimum wage of £2.00 an hour. If you do 7 hours a week, you should be getting £14 a week.

Also, it might be worth thinking of alternative jobs. Hand washing cars could be quite lucrative. Some people are willing to pay £6 to have their car hand washed and polished. You could offer to do it for £4. Then all you need to do is wash 2 cars a week and you will get more than a 7 time a week paper round.

What is a good wage for a paper round?

For a schoolchild under 16 years of age. A decent paper round would be something earning an hourly rate of £3.00. If your round takes 45mins a day – 6 days a week – 4.5 hours a week. Look to get at least £13.50.

    • Well this was back in 2011 so if by some miracle you’re still looking for a paper round and see this – it’s worth it. I know you probably won’t get paid much but it’s better than nothing right?

      • Well I do a paper round everyday accept sundays. I do 21 papers and get paid about £80-£90 a month. And the papers get delivered to my house In the morning so all I have to do is deliver them.

  1. Hi i have been offered a paper round job and was wondering how much would i get payed for working 7 days a week, mornings, 1 round only? and does my wage depend on how many papers i deliver ?? Thanks for any answers. 🙂

    • Well you would probably get about £3 an hour or 45 minutes but it does depend as my step dad did a paper round and he had the hardest schedule compare to others so he got £15 a week and £20 a week when he done Monday to Friday and then Sunday he delivered 15-20 papers by bike and it took him 45 mins and he had to go the furthest. So in the end it worked out at 1,080 pound a year. It also might be worth taking into account that on or near Christmas people usually leave notes on there doors saying for the paper boy to knock on the door and they say thanks for doing the rounds for the year and give you some tip. Well most people do that so you could earn a bit more on one round around that time of year

  2. I do a paper round 6 days a week, mon-sat, every day i walk about 3 miles to do it and i post around 25 papers, i get £17 i dont know if that is an okay price

  3. I really want a paper round because I would like to work for some extra money. Is it a good idea??

      • I’ve just started at the telegraph and Argus and I have to do a 4 mile route 6days a week and only get 8p per house. How come you got so much more?(I’m currently getting £2.04 an hour)

  4. i do a round on a sunday morning, it takes me an hour, get up at 7:10 and have a trolley with 23 papers, i get £5.00 i think this is dead good- doesnt waste week time either 🙂

  5. I think it is a good idea because u can earn money to go towards shopping trips and stuff with ur friends! I may become a paper girl myself!Make sure you get about £4 for 2-3 streets depending on how long they r

    • I am 13 in a month and a week and am thinking about maybe starting a paper round as I would love to baby sitting but I wouldn’t want a 13 year old looking after my child so why would anyone else? So do you think it’s worth it? Haven’t looked into rates just yet.

  6. if children want the money they would be botherd to do it £14 a week thats a fair deal but it depends on if you WANT IT! I WOULD!

  7. hi! im 15 and do 100 papers once a week for FOUR POUNDS??!?!??!?!?!?? this cannot be fair nor legal i demand a raise! AND HOW THE FEK DID YOU GET £115 TIPS?????????? WHERE DO YOU LIVE????????????

  8. I really want a paper round because I would like to work for some extra money. Is it a good idea? I want to know what is the average price

    • There is no average price I’m afraid. I’ve been looking around and have just done my first week on a round and only get 8p per house(24houses, 4miles). But looking on this website shows you can get way more or way less

    • well i get 3 pound a day 6 days a week which is £18 a week and i deliver about 25 papers so i think that’s the price to go for maybe a bit below but not to much also Christmas bonus is DA BOMB!! XD

  9. I am 12 and really need a job looking at this I don’t know wether this is good pricing or not please reply x

    • I’m 14 years old and i do a paper round at a newsagents that’s quite close to me, i do one round a day, Monday to Saturday and i get about £18-£20 a week which is good money. I’d try to make an agreement with the manager or whoever owns this shop. You can do however many rounds a day, but you need to make sure they give you at least minimum wage, which is at least £3 an hour.

  10. I know this is old but I can’t believe how little you get paid, I get £50 a week. I do a paper round each day and it takes about 45min. This is with mccolls.

  11. I am 12 and I am wondering if I should negotiate a price of £3.00 per hour and do 2 hours a day for £42.00 per week. Please can someone tell me if this is possible.

    • No Elliot it does not work like that your round should not take more than an half an hour but work and expect a maximum of 15 pounds or dollars a week

    • no i wouldn’t bother especially with your age since you shouldn’t even be doing a paper round legally you have to be 13 years old.

    • That sounds about right as 3 pound an hour times 2 for two hours is 6 pounds a day times 7 which is 42 pound a week so minimal pay realy that sounds quite alright

  12. i get payed 15.50 it takes me 15 to 20 min a day, i have 18 to 20 papers but i ride a bike also im an athlete and i do 6 days a week
