Ask an Economic Question 2014

You are welcome to ask any questions on Economics. Though you might also like to try google custom search (top right) to see if the topic has been covered before.

I am looking to explain economic principles / ideas/ recent developments in economics. I can’t promise to answer, but will try if it meets the criteria below.

  •     Please don’t ask me to do your coursework / assignment e.t.c. (I can usually tell if it is a homework question!)
  •     Please don’t ask any maths calculations.
  •     The question and answer will be published here where everyone can see it (including your teacher!)
  •     I aim to try and simplify economics; as a rough guide I would aim at an understanding similar to a good British A Level student.
  •     I am looking to explain economic principles / ideas/ recent developments in economics.
  •     I will answer as a new post, if you leave email address, I’ll usually send quick email. Check home page of blog for new post. With question and answers

  1. Hi,

I am trying to find Historical Unemployment Forecast data. Harder than expected. Anybody knows where to find that?

I am also looking for Employment Protection Legislation (EPL) Index by state in the US. Any idea? Thanks!

  2. Can someone please help me solve D. and E of the solution.

    Y=F(K,L x E)

Capital income is 50 % of GDP. Per year, the growth rate of the population is 1% (0.01), the
growth rate of the efficiency of labor is 2% (0.02), the depreciation of capital is 4% (0.04), and
the savings rate is 14% (0.14)

    A) Use the constant return to scale property to find the generic function for output per effective worker, y1=f(k1)

    B) Find a functional for the marginal product of capital i.e. MPK will be a function of k1.

    C) Find the steady state capital per effective worker, output per effective worker and consumption per effective worker

    D) Find the Golden Rule level of capital per effective worker, the saving rate that will get the economy there, and consumption per effective worker

    E) What is the long run steady-state growth rate of output per worker? What is the long run steady-state growth rate of total output?
