Ask an Economic Question

You are welcome to ask any questions on Economics. Though you might also like to try google custom search (top right) to see if the topic has been covered before.

I am looking to explain economic principles / ideas/ recent developments in economics. I can’t promise to answer, but will try if it meets the criteria below.

  • Please don’t ask me to do your coursework / assignment e.t.c. (I can usually tell if it is a homework question!)
  • Please don’t ask any maths calculations.
  • The question and answer will be published here where everyone can see it (including your teacher!)
  • I aim to try and simplify economics; as a rough guide I would aim at an understanding similar to a good British A Level student.

  •  I will answer as a new post, if you leave email address, I’ll usually send quick email. Check home page of blog for new post. With question and answers

  1. As someone who has not lived in England or the UK, ever, but grew up on a lot of British TV (I guess that’s how it was back in the 90’s in Canada)

My question is what caused the shift from using the Shilling to Pound Sterling and when and why did happen?

  2. Hi, I’d be grateful for your thoughts on the famous/infamous Howe Budget of 1981 when 364 economists wrote a letter of protest to the Times. Despite tax rises and expenditure cuts the UK economy started to improve. To what extent, if at all, can this be reconciled with a Keynesian view of how the economy works? thank you

  3. Hi,
I have up-to £300 a month at my disposal and I was considering overpaying my mortgage with this amount however I spoke to someone the other day who mentioned it might not be the best option due to inflation eroding my mortgage and that investing my money into a high interest savings account could be better?..I’m a little confused as to how that could beat overpaying my mortgage ? Can you help me with this?
    Thanks you for your time.

    Matt

  4. Hello! Could you please tell me how command economy tries to reduce scarcity? I would be glad if you tell me about it, because it would be helpful in my project?

  5. How long will the American dollar preside over the world economy in light of it extreme nationalism phase, growth of China, and competing nationalistic urges of other countries?
